Meet the Danphe, Nepal's National Bird

💡 Did you know?

The danphe, also called the Himalayan monal, is Nepal's national bird — and it's hard to miss, thanks to its shimmering rainbow feathers.

Male danphes have feathers that flash green, blue, purple, and copper in the sunlight, almost like they're wearing a shiny jacket.

They live high up in the mountains, often above 2,000 meters, where they scratch through the soil looking for roots, seeds, and insects to eat.

Because it's so special, it's against the law to hunt the danphe in Nepal — it's a protected bird!
