Why Are the Himalayas So Tall?

Millions of years ago, two giant pieces of the Earth's crust — huge slabs of rock called tectonic plates — slowly crashed into each other.

One plate carried India, and the other carried Asia. When they collided, the land between them had nowhere to go but up, crumpling into towering peaks.

That collision is still happening today, incredibly slowly — which means the Himalayas are actually still growing a tiny bit taller every single year!

Mount Everest, the tallest point on the whole planet, sits right on the border between Nepal and Tibet, standing over 8,800 meters high.
