The Kite That Flew Too High
During Dashain, Bibek flew the biggest kite he had ever built — bright red with a long, ribboned tail.
A sudden gust of wind pulled the string tight, and for one impossible moment, Bibek felt his feet lift off the rooftop. The kite carried him gently above the town, over rooftops strung with laundry and marigolds.
He saw his whole neighborhood from above: his school, the temple bells swinging, and his grandmother waving up at him from the terrace, laughing instead of worrying.
Just as quickly as it began, the wind settled, and Bibek floated back down to his own rooftop, kite string still in hand, grinning too hard to explain what had just happened.
